I preach and practice it all day long. It is crucial as we all get older. Maintaining our balance is imperative to our overall health and wellness, reducing the rate of falls and decreasing the cumulative injury cycle that can occur.
When the body is placed in an unstable environment, it must react by contracting the right muscle at the right time to maintain balance. The muscles responsible for keeping us in balance are often overlooked in the gym. A proprioceptively enriched environment (controlled, unstable) will challenge the balance and stabilization systems of the body to recruit more muscles to stabilize itself, which is fundamental for optimum performance AND burns more calories!
Improving our neuromuscular efficiency enables us to maintain balance during functional movement patterns, whether we are playing golf, tennis or simply participating in day-to-day activities.
